Als Gin

The very first product launched by Sønderborg Distillery is Als Gin. This gin is a tribute to the beautiful island of Als which can be seen from the distillery. The first bottles were put up for sale in the early summer of 2018 and were the first Danish distilled gin in recent times in Southern Denmark. It took over a year to arrive at just the right recipe and taste. We have not compromised on quality, and therefore we have also chosen to produce only 100% organic products.

Method

The distillation takes place in traditional copper distills and is made according to the ‘London Dry Gin’ method, where only water is added after distillation to hit the right alcohol percentage and taste. We have chosen a method where junipers are mortared and rest in the alcohol before distillation, and when we distill this is done twice to give a more rounded taste as you know it from whiskey. We run ‘small batch’ production and with numbered bottles. Als Gin is at 43%, as we believe this provides the right combination in terms of taste and expression.

Taste

The taste is beside juniper, as it should be with a gin, in the direction of licorice. This is because botanicals such as fennel, anise and licorice root are used. A mix of both classic but also new botanicals such as sea buckthorn.

Appearance

The bottle is of heavy quality and the appearance is chosen as it fits well in the hand. The black cork compliments the black text and logo on the labels. The front page label is adorned with a hand drawing of Sønderborg Castle made by the Danish artist Georg Persson. Georg has made hand drawings of several well-known buildings in Sønderborg. The labels are made of thick cotton paper of good quality.

Suggested serving

We recommend a Gin & Tonic with 1 part Als Gin and 3-4 parts Organic Herbal Tonic from Aqua Monaco. Find both products in our webshop. The procedure is to first put lots of ice in a glass. Then pour 1 part Als Gin followed by 3-4 parts Herbal Tonic. Dried junipers or a slice of lemon can be used as a garnish and as a last step, stir a few times with a spoon to mix the drink. Bon appetite!
